1 Day Training Workshops

1 day workshop led by Professor Andrew Samuels "The Father's Body: Clinical, Cultural and Personal Revisions"
(previously: "Masculinity and the Role of the Father").

Being held at the Cornerstone building, Norreys Avenue in Wokingham on Saturday 6th December 2008, 10.00am - 4.00pm.

Although the neglect of the father in psychotherapy has been rectified to some extent, many accounts of his role seem clichéd and prejudiced. We think we know what happens when he is absent but say less about what happens when he is present. Therapists run the risk of excessive conventionality in which the father's absence and malevolence are foregrounded whilst his presence and benevolence are still poorly understood. In this workshop, Andrew Samuels will explore issues to do with being a father as well as with having a father. He'll pay attention to the way masculinity is changing and struggling in today's society. There will be special attention paid to the father's body. Participants are asked to bring relevant clinical material and be prepared to share some of their own experiences in this area.

Andrew Samuels was one of the pioneers in psychotherapeutic thinking about the father and about men. Over the past thirty years, Andrew has evolved a unique clinical blend of post-Jungian, relational psychoanalytic and humanistic/integrative approaches. He was elected one of the first group of Honorary Fellows of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. In addition to his clinical practice, he works internationally as a political consultant. Andrew is Professor of Analytical Psychology at the University of Essex, Visiting Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, New York University, Honorary Professor of Psychology and Therapeutic Studies at Roehampton University and Visiting Professor of Psychoanalytic Studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He is a Training Analyst of the Society of Analytical Psychology. He is the founder of Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility, the 2003 holder of the Hans W. Loewald Award for Distinguished Services of the International Federation for Psychoanalytic Education, and a Board Member of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy.

His books have been translated into 19 languages and include Jung and the Post-Jungians (1985), The Father (1986), A Critical Dictionary of Jungian Analysis (1986), The Plural Psyche: Personality, Morality and the Father (1989), Psychopathology (1989), The Political Psyche (1993), and Politics on the Couch (2001).

If you would like to register please email your request or telephone 0118 978 7879 or write to us at The Cornerstone, Norreys Avenue, Wokingham, RG40 1UE.

Past Event - 1 Day Training Workshop

This 1 Day Training Workshop aims to increase our understanding of siblings. Siblings play an enormous part in our life, yet this is something that psychologists and therapists have ignored, principally because sibling relationships do not lend themselves to a straightforward theory in the way Mother-child relationships have done in the development of attachment theory. For many of our clients, their sibling relationships are more problematic than the relationships they had with their parents. In this workshop we will look at how sibling relationships are formed and the part these relationships play over the whole life span.

Dorothy Rowe is a well known Clinical Psychologist, writer and broadcaster. Originally from Australia she has lived and worked in the UK for many years, being renowned for her work on how we create meaning and how the meaning we create determines what we do. She is the author of 12 books, the most popular being "Depression, the Way out of your Prison" and "Beyond Fear". Her latest book, published last year "My Dearest Enemy, My Dangerous Friend" is a radical examination of our relationship with our siblings.

Numbers are limited so please book early to secure a place by contacting us by email or telephone on 0118 978 7879 for a booking slip to be posted to you. Past Event - 1 day workshop with Dr Moira Walker "Understanding and Working with Dissociation"

Being held at the Cornerstone building in Norreys Avenue in Wokingham on Saturday 1st December 2007, 10.00am - 4.00pm

If you would like to register please email your request or telephone 0118 978 7879 or write to us at The Cornerstone, Norreys Avenue, Wokingham, RG40 1UE.

Past Event - 1 Day Workshop

This 1 Day Workshop aims to increase our understanding of dissociation, both theoretically and clinically. It will look at what is meant by dissociation, and will explore the continuum of meaning from the one extreme of multiple personality to the everyday ability to daydream. The origins of dissociation in terms of the impact and effect of trauma, and in particular the experience of an abused child, will be examined. The implications of the child’s defensive strategies, how these are taken into adulthood and the impact in therapy of dissociation, particularly in terms of the counter transference will be considered.

Attendees are invited to bring along their own case examples as some time will be given in small groups for exploration of the therapeutic dilemmas and difficulties that have been experienced in this work. Consideration will be given to the question of what may work therapeutically with dissociated clients and what interventions, styles etc may be contra-indicated and even anti-therapeutic.

Dr. Moira Walker is a registered psychotherapist and Fellow of the BACP and is a part time Reader in the Institute of Health and Community Studies at Bournemouth University, also practising as a psychotherapist and supervisor. She has considerable experience as a trainer, supervisor, practioner and writer, with a particular interest in working with survivors of childhood abuse.

Her books include: "Surviving Secrets: the experience of abuse for the child, the adult and the helper" , "Hidden Selves - an exploration of Muliple Personality", and "Questions of Abuse" as well as co-editing two major series of books on counselling and therapy.
