1 Day Workshops

Attachment and Somatic Communications

(Listening to your body in the therapeutic encounter)

Led by:    Jean Knights

Saturday 5th June  2010      10.00am  -  4.00pm

Attachment theory stresses the importance of early relationships and their impact on the young child. Here lie the foundations for our capacity to relate, to empathise, to regulate emotional states and to play and be exploratory. These early learnings are essentially implicit and procedural. Clients will bring beliefs and behaviours shaped in the early relational container which will be embedded in non-verbal communications and embodied by one or both in the therapeutic exchange. As therapists, we can develop an attunement to the somatic impact of the client’s narrative so we can help them make senses of what can paradoxically only be heard through the non-verbal. It challenges the therapist to use his or her own body as a medium for understanding the drama of the client’s inner world. In the training day we will explore how an Attachment approach necessitates the ability to work in this way if we are to reach these early influences and provide a new experience.

The day will include didactic input, some brief exercises, small group discussion and Q and A opportunities.

Jean Knights is a BACP accredited counsellor, UKCP registered psychotherapist, qualified supervisor and trainer. She has 28 years of clinical experience, 18 of these in the NHS as well as private practice. While concentrating on her private psychotherapy practice and supervision, she continues to develop Attachment oriented CPD for therapists. In the last 10 years she has run training days on various aspects of Attachment and believes (passionately) that a knowledge of attachment and its correlates can only benefit therapists and clients. Positive attachment relationships are vital for life long well being.
