The word “counselling” will mean different things to different people. There are many definitions of counselling and there are many philosophies and theories on the subject.
At BCC we see counselling as a form of helping that is focused on the needs and goals of the individual.
Life in 21st century Britain means living in a busy complex changing environment. The many benefits and comforts we enjoy in our daily lives come at a price. The increasing demand and request for counselling in some way reflects the stress and fragmentation of life today. Most of the time we cope with the hand that life deals us but occasionally we are thrown by events that we do not have the resources or capacity to deal with. Some people rely on family, friends, neighbours or a priest for support. However for others this support may either not be available or not appropriate.
Counselling at BCC is based on the psychodynamic approach which focuses on the idea that many of our troubles in life are the result of mental process that are hidden from us, which we refer to as the unconscious process. A traumatic situation today may have its roots in the past but we may not be conscious of the link. Our counsellors seek to help people become aware of these unconscious processes. With this new understanding and perspective a counsellor will work alongside you to consider a fresh way of thinking or behaving which may be more appropriate to your current situation.
Counselling is offered on a one-to-one basis or to those with relationship issues those involved can be seen separately or together - as determined to be most appropriate.
The Counselling Centre works alongside and with the medical community and, only with client's permission and when appropriate, advises the client's GP of counselling start and end dates.
